Workshop Translating Technical Knowledge with Dr. Sonja Brentjes, organised by Meekyung MacMurdie and Corinne Mühlemann
Dr. Sonja Brentjes (Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin) will give a public lecture on spatial representation in premodern Islamic maps entitled “Spatial representations in maps from premodern Islamicate societies.”. In a following workshop on the theme of “Translating Technical Knowledge,” we will consider methods for interpreting and translating premodern Arabic mathematic treatises. We are interested particularly in the semantic range of classical Arabic — and the particular use of terms in specialised knowledge communities.
